In past Hearing Health Awareness Months, we made the case for why folks should get regular hearing assessments and consider treatments.
But there’s another crucial element of care that the team takes extremely serious – hearing loss prevention.
Hearing loss isn’t inevitable
There’s an old adage, first uttered by Benjamin Franklin: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” When it comes to hearing loss, this statement rings true.
The reason for this is that most issues result from listening to very loud sounds without protection.
You could, for example, work with heavy machinery and regularly witness sounds above a threshold that’s safe, leading to a problem.
Similarly, you might hear one instance of gunfire at close range, with this enough to harm your hearing significantly.
Hearing loss prevention strategies can stop issues in their tracks, meaning you can live your life without a worry.
Young people are threatened
We often assume that hearing loss occurs among those who’ve had long, exciting lives and a vast number of experiences.
But more and more, young people’s lifestyles are threatening their hearing.
In a recent study among 18-27-year-olds, researchers found that all young adults who engage in noisy recreational activities without protection – such as going to concerts – risk hearing damage.
This data adds weight to a Word Health Organisation study, which showed 1.1 billion people of a similar age are at risk of hearing damage during their everyday activities.
A simple hearing assessment can reveal if you have a hearing loss, and if this is confirmed, the team can suggest treatments.
But the best solution, as always, is to wear adequate protection.
Hearing protection has advanced
Many people assume hearing protection comes in one standard form – the foam earplugs that you can pick up at a grocery store.
But actually, hearing protection has developed significantly over the years, and each person’s needs can be catered for with different styles and products.
As an office of music lovers, the team at Berkeley Hearing Center is particularly used to serving local instrumentalists and singers.
We fit them with custom earplugs, which lets them witness crucial sounds without compromise.
As a musician’s hearing is essential to their work, this is an important investment for someone in the early stages of a life-long career or hobby.
