Have you noticed some struggles with your hearing recently? Perhaps your kids or grandkids are talking to you, and you can't quite make out what they’re saying. Maybe you realize you’ve been turning the volume on the TV up louder and louder or feeling lost in conversations where there’s a lot of background noise distracting you.

Age-related hearing loss, or presbycusis, affects millions of Americans and individuals worldwide. Presbycusis is the number one type of hearing loss worldwide – but you don’t have to deal with it alone.

As we get older, our bodies and certain functions naturally age with us, including our hearing. The tiny hair cells in our ears responsible for helping us hear gradually lose functionality, leading to presbycusis.

Hearing loss challenges and getting older are often linked as a result, but hearing challenges can affect anyone of any age.

Presbycusis can be caused by the natural process of aging, but factors that can trigger hearing loss also include loud noise exposure, medication side effects, and having a genetic predisposition to hearing loss.

If you’re concerned that you’re dealing with an age-related hearing loss, symptoms to look out for include a gradual loss of hearing higher-pitched sounds, like doorbells, phones, and children’s voices, sounds feeling muffled or far away, and struggling to understand speech in loud environments like restaurants or event halls.

Your ears do a lot more for your body than just hearing! Untreated hearing loss has long been linked to issues with balance, cognitive decline, anxiety and social isolation, and an increased risk of dementia.

Age-related hearing loss can lead to major effects on your communication skills and cause rifts between loved ones with poor communication. Constant repetition can feel frustrating to ask for – you might find yourself withdrawing from social situations as a result.

Hearing loss can be a lonely thing to experience. With the help of professional hearing care personalized to your needs, you can reconnect with your loved ones and rejoin the conversations you were missing.
