Berkeley Hills Expert Articles | Wireless Technology in Hearing Aids-Are There Any Health Concerns?

Though I hope you read further, the answer to the title is a resounding no! Hearing aids and associated assistive listening devices (ALDs) are extremely safe, and amazing devices that only help their users.

Wireless technologies are highly regulated, for both safety and performance concerns. Especially in our global economy, manufacturers have to design products that are able to pass the most stringent regulations.

When it comes to technology and health concerns, it is important to have facts based on sound science. What we are talking about is electromagnetic radiation (EMR). The term “radiation” is a loaded one for many folks, but we depend on it for things other than technology. Sunlight is a form of EMR! But, as with many things, too much of a good thing can lead to problems.  The different forms of EMR vary along a spectrum based on the wavelength or frequency of the energy, from extremely low frequency (ELF), radio/television waves (4-14 MHz), microwaves (including Bluetooth @ 2.4 GHz), visible & ultraviolet light to X-rays and gamma rays (nuclear power).

Based on effects on human tissue, the spectrum can be broken down into two categories: non-ionizing and ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation, such as ultraviolet, X and gamma rays, is the form of EMR that can damage cells/DNA. That’s why it’s best to prevent sunburns and have x-rays only when necessary. Wireless communication technologies (radio, TV, Bluetooth, WiFi) are non-ionizing EMR, specifically thermal non-ionizing EMR. Though they can’t damage DNA, they have a thermal or warming effect. Hence their use for microwave ovens. But are hearing aids slowly ‘frying’ our brains? Hardly!

Hearing aids are specifically designed to emit very low levels of EMR. Even those with 2.4 GHz capability produce dramatically lower levels of EMR than even cellular phones. By comparison, you would have to wear over 70 of these devices actively using Bluetooth to absorb the same amount of energy as holding a phone to your ear.

So rest assured, properly fit hearing aids only help their users. And if you (or someone you love) still has hearing aids without this amazing technology, do yourself a favor and speak to your audiologist about how the latest wireless technologies can improve your quality of life.
